Here’s my new translation I’ve made of the song Drop Pop Candy lyrics written by Reol, with music by Giga-P in 2014.
The song was released simultaneously as a vocaloid sung track with versions sung by Reol and Giga-P.
Drop Pop Candy Lyrics Meaning
The song lyrics to Drop Pop Candy are quite abstract and make use of the ambiguity in the Japanese language that can be achieved when omitting subjects and objects of sentences.
Roughly speaking, it is a love song as is evidenced by lines like 想い合っていく これからずっと “We will think fondly of eachother from here until forever”.
It references “love” several times through the song, but not using the words most commonly associated with the English word for love such as 愛 ai, 恋 koi, or 好き suki.
Rather, the song uses the rather more ambiguous (how much more does the concept of “love need to be anyway?) 思いあう omoiau, which could mean any of “love”, “think of eachother”, “have feelings for eachother”.
There are several lines in the song that hint that the relationship between the people dueting in the song is not exactly serene.
In fact, you get the sense that the protagonist lovers are stuck in a rut, being worn down by the monotony of the everyday in live and love:
何気ないような日常が今ほら
And everyday rolls on just the same
変わりたいと藍色に染まりだす
I need a change, paint it indigo shades
But you also get the sense that they are determined to make it work, to love and laugh in the face of adversity. You can see this clearly in the refrain:

もっと愛してる！ 日々を君を
And I will love you more
Day by day, I’m sure
いっそ七転んで 何回起き上がって
Fall down seven times, just to stay upright
So, in this way, the song becomes more universal than just being a straight love song. It is also a song about overcoming adversity more generally.
The song is also punctuated by observations of a cat that seems to be spying on the main protagonists of the song:

(The pussy-cat purrs saying Pleased to meet you)
This is a nice device, serving to break you out of the main narrative (if you can call it that) of the song and provide an element of comic relief.
The song also throws some curveballs with lines like:
昨日の彼も朝焼けもいないけど それでそれでいいの
And I don’t mind
When the sun it rises
If that boy from last night Is gone
Here it sounds as if the singer is talking not to a lover, but to a third person and saying “I don’t care if my one-night-stand takes off in the morning”. This seems at odds with the rest of the song. Perhaps the singer is talking to the observing cat, saying “I don’t care about this boy anyway”.
You could read this as a kind of pouty aside.
Internal consistency aside, the song also features some majestically poetic sweeps (indeed, perhaps a little poetic for it’s own good IMHO):

To put together my translation, I have gone for a rhyming, singable translation that has a rhythm that matches the song. As such, sometimes I’ve strayed a little from the literal meanings. But I think you actually get a better sense of the overall song and what it is trying to portray that way. Feel free to consult your dictionary for individual words if you doubt my interpretations – several of the sections could be rendered several ways.
