Every year Japan creates a list of new words that have entered the Japanese language. In the 2020 list the word “kimetsu no yaiba” made an appearance. Such was the rise in popularity of anime “Demon Slayer”.

I’ve written a bunch about Demon Slayer Opening Theme 鬼滅の刃主題歌 Gurenge 紅蓮華 with lyrics in english translation.

And I’ve gone in to the nuts and bolts around what the Japanese name of Demon Slayer Kimetsu No Yaiba means here.

Amongst other things, the program is notable for the striking kimono patterns worn by many of the characters. It didn’t take long for the show to take off internationally and for Cosplayers to Tanjiro-style sniff a costuming opportunity.

With that in mind, here is a gallery of some of our favourite Demon Slayer cosplay options.

The Demon Slayer juggernaut looks set to roam the world of the undead for some time. The Kimetsu-tai is going to need recruits for some time. It may be time to don your colorful haori to go in search of some tortured souls to destroy!

Japanese Essay Tokyo Tower

A Japanese essay read in Japanese and English. The essay by, Inazo Inamoto, uses Tokyo Tower to examine the difference between seeing from a far and getting up close, and argues that getting up close wins.
In today’s age of information gluts, and gluttony, where to “know” something is to say that you once googled it and scanned the the top 3 search result headlines, the essay argues the case for deeper experiential learning.

Enter the realm of Studio Ghibli cosplay. The good news is, if you want to do a Ghibli costume, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. There are no shortage of people that have been there before you, so here we’ll hope to give you some ideas, and some links to different products that can help.

Studio Ghibli Cosplay options

Totoro Cosplay Outfits

As for Spirited Away cosplay, Chihiro often gets given the cold shoulder in the dress-up stakes. She just can’t compete with that strangely enigmatic no-face man kaonashi. The Beatles even had a song about him “He’s a real noface man”, right. I think that’s how it went…

You can also find Haku outfits. Don’t forget Chihiro, I mean, her name is in the Japanese title of the film “Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi” right?

If you want to do Kiki’s Delivery Service cosplay, you’ve got some simple options. At the most basic, your Kiki costume can just be a simple blue dress and bow. If you want to go deluxe, add in broom and Jiji plush. If you’ve got a man-friend, get him to put on a striped red shirt, jeans and glasses so he can be your love interest Tombo. Beware, there is a high likelihood that he will be asked at least 50 times if he is “Where’s Wally” wherever he goes.

Any of these would do the trick.

Howl's Moving Castle Cosplay

For Howl’s Moving Castle, the obvious choice is Sophie, with your main choice being old Sophie or young Sophie. The big challenge here is finding the ye olde style dress, for which buying a ready made one is the simple way to. Then you just need a simple white apron to go over the top.

For men Howl himself is a logical character, or perhaps you could cover yourself bits-o-junk to be the castle itself.

Princess Mononoke Cosplay

If you want to unleash your inner wild child, then it’s time to un-closet your Princess Mononoke costume! Think red face paint for blood, daggers, furry capes. A boney necklace helps a lot!

Hopefully this article has got your Ghibli juices flowing! Let us know if you have any other Ghibli Cosplay or Ghibli costume ideas we should add here.
