いろんなレットイットビーの日本語訳がネット上にありますが、どれも１００％ピンと来ないから他の訳を参考にしながら西洋人、英語の母語話者として、自分の訳を作りました。
ビートルズのレットイットビーは日本人のほとんどの人は知っているのではないかと思います。
音楽を聞くだけですごく素敵な曲で十分楽しめる、感動ができると思います。歌詞の意味もみんなある程度、大雑把に分かっていると思いますが、もっと歌詞を深く見て本当の意味を探ると色々面白い発見があるから今日はその話をしたいと思います。
Mother Maryの意味
後でlet it beの題名を見てみたいと思いますがまずはmother maryという歌詞から考えて行きたいと思います。
一番議論されている歌詞は「Mother Mary」のところです。聖母マリアとして解釈が出来るし、ポールのお母さんとして解釈出来ます。僕が思うにはどちらもの意味が含まれていると思います。
まず、”Mother Mary”を辞書で調べたら聖母マリアが出てきます。
確かに Mother Maryはそういう意味です。
でも、この曲はどういう風に作られたかというとポールが夢の中で自分の母親が出て来て、「ポールはいろいろ悩んでいるようだけど、大丈夫だよ。そのままほっとおけば何とかなるよ。」と言ってくれたらしいです。
それで、なんと、ポールのお母さんの名前は「メリー」なんです。マリアの英語発音のメリーです。
ポールのお母さんと聖母マリア
それでみんなよくこのMother Maryはポールのお母さんを指しているのか、聖母マリアを指しているのか、議論されます。
ポール自身どっちなのか聞かれたとき、「人の解釈に任せます」と言っています。
じゃ、どっちなんでしょうか。
僕が思うにはどちらもだと思います。
普段自分のお母さんでも、人のお母さんでも、”Mother 何とか”と呼ぶことはほとんどないと思います。
どちらかというと「Motherなんとか」をいうとキリスト教の尼さんのえらい人の呼び方になります。
要するにポールが自分のお母さんをMother Maryと呼んでいたことはまずないでしょう。
いろいろな文化の宗教においての「母」
でもそもそも聖母マリアの存在、イメージ、意味合いを考えると、人間だれでも、いつでも慰めて、癒してくれる普遍的な「お母さん」のことです。
Alain De Bottonという好きな哲学者がいるんですけど、かれがいうには、どこ、いつの文化においても人間がこういう癒してくれる「お母さん」の存在を求めます。
ちょっと調べて見るといろんな癒してくれる「お母さんの神様」が山ほど出てきます。紀元前２６００年ごろエジプトの方にHathorとIsisという癒してくれる神様がいました。１２００年ごろの中東の方にはAsherahという神様がいて、南米にはTonantzinとCoatlicueがいたし、DeviとDurgaなどがいて、東南アジアと日本には観音様も似たような役割を果たしています。
人間には何歳になっても「よし、よし」と言って慰めてくれる存在が必要です。
だから、Let It Beに出てくる「お母さん」あるいは「聖母マリア」はそういう存在です。ポールにとって実際のお母さんでもありながら、世界が求めている普遍的な「お母さん」でもあります。
面白いでしょう。
国境を超えて西洋人でも、アジア人でも、ほかの国の人でもこの曲のパワーは共通しているではありませんか。
ポールは子供の時地元の教会の合唱団で歌っていたから、「聖母マリア」に親近感はあったに違いありません。
ジョンレノンはレットイットビーについてどう思ったなのか
ちなみにジョンはこの曲あまりにもキリスト教、宗教的な響きがあってぜんぜん好きじゃなかった。ジョンのが書いたimagineの
“Imagine there’s no heaven, no religion too”
「天国がないのを宗像しろ宗教がないのをそうぞうしろ」
とすごく対照的ですね。
じゃ、この曲の「お母さんの慰め」の趣旨が分かったと思いますので、次は題名を見てみましょう。
Let it Be意味
「Let It Be」はいろんな訳し方があります。もっとも日常的な訳し方にすると
「そのままにしておけ」
「ほっといて」
「なるようになる」
「なんとかなる」
とかになると思います。
「そのへんにしましょう」でもいけます。
Let it beはそんなに日常会話には出てこないと思いますが出てくるとしたらどちらかというと多分ちょっと怒った口調で使うことの方が多いと思います。たとえば
Why do you always dress so badly? Your shoes, your shirt, your pants, couldn’t you just pay a bit more attention to how you look?
いつもだらしないね。靴とかシャツとかズボンとかもうちょっと外見を意識してもいいじゃないか。

もうほっておいて。人には自分の服の着方があるから。
でも、正式的な訳し方にすると「あるがままに」「なすがままに」「そのままでいいです」とかの訳をよく見かけます。
「身をゆだねなさい」なんかの訳も見ました。
一番分かりやすい訳にすれば「大丈夫だよ。心配しなくていいよ」という感じになるかもしれません。「お母さんは何があっても愛するから、なんとかなる」という意味です。
なんと慰めてくれる曲なんでしょう。
とは言え、非常にシンプルな曲でもあります。
コードは簡単。歌詞は少ない。
僕からしたらLet it beというセリフはちょっと出すぎているんじゃないかと思いますが、分かりやすくて、同じのが何回も出てくるからこそ人気があるのかもしれません。
