I had a chat with my friend Ai about what we thought were our top 10 Kanji fails. The transcript of our talk is outlined below, along with the images we talked about.
We tried not to “dig the boot in” too much into any of these people and their Chinese character tattoos. Hopefully, this perspective of a native Japanese speaker and a Japanese-speaking native English speaker on kanji tattoos is interesting.
Hopefully it gives some ideas of the dangers of getting a tattoo using Japnese lettering and what to avoid.
And it’s not like don’t ever like kanji tats. In fact I’ve got a Japanese letter Kanji and Japanese letter tattoos here.
Here’s our conversation.
Bad Japanese Letter Tattoos Top 10
1. 馬鹿外人 “Stupid Foreigner”
では、よくある漢字の間違いトップ10からいきましょう。
Now we’re going to do our top ten Kanji fails.
まず最初ですが、これはよく見かけますね、アイさん
Number one here is a bit of a classic, Ai.
バカ外人
It’s “baka gaijin”.
頭の悪い外国人って意味ですね。
Which means a stupid foreigner.
これどう思います？
What do you think of this one?
自虐といえば自虐だね。
Well, I gues you could say it is self-deprecating
あー、ここまで来ると面白いという
Yeah, it’s almost so bad that it’s good.
これはダメなのかわからない。
I’m not sure if I actually think this one’s bad.
ちょっと面白い。
It’s kind of funny.
思うに、この人は自虐ネタでやってる。
I imagine this person, they’re doing it as an ironic statement.
そうそうそう！
Yes, yes, yes
そんなに、これでは「いいね」とはならないけどね笑。
But i don’t think you could say this is “good”.
自虐ネタだとしても
Even as an ironic statement.
ちょっと面白いとは言い難いね。
It’s hard to say that it’s good.
それに、まず質問。これ自虐ネタなのか
And I guess the obvious question is, was it an ironic statement?
タトゥ-いれる人に描かれちゃったのか
Were they fooled into doing this by some tattoo person?
とか、酔っ払ってたか、ふざけてか…
Or they were drunk or did this as a joke?
でもどうかな、そんなことする人いるかな…
But I don’t know. I don’t think anyone…
こんなタトゥ-をだまして入れたりする人がいると思う？
Would anyone really fool someone into doing a tattoo like this?
何だ、この人多分めっちゃ
I guess this person really…
自分の、この、自虐が面白いって思ったんじゃない？
felt like this self-deprecation was funny?
じゃ、自虐でやったと思っているね。
So you think they’re doing it as an ironic thing？
そうそうそう。
yes, yes, yes.
もう一つ思ったのは、文法的に
And the other thing I was thinking was, like, linguistically speaking.
「馬鹿な外人」じゃないとおかしくない？
Shouldn’t it be bakana gaijin shouldn’t it have a “na”?
その方が聞きやすいかもね。
That would sound better.
バカな外人、バカ外人よりもね。
“baka na gaijin” rather than “baka gaijin”
さらに「馬鹿」になるね。
So maybe that adds another level of “baka” to it…
どう思う？

I don’t know, who knows?

Maybe it’s something that somebody just,
フェイクニュースの映像として作ったのかもでもかなり本当っぽい。
made as a fake news image or something, but it looks pretty realistic.
ペンで書いてたりね、こう。
Or maybe it was, like, written with a pen.
可能性はあるけれど、誰もわからないね
Could be, who knows?

2. かんたん 愛 くれまん Easy love no givee (?!)
あ、そうだ、言っておきたかった、この言葉をこの順番で持ってきたのは
Just I should mention my criteria for putting the order of these was,
もしこのタトゥーを入れたらどれだけ恥ずかしいか、です。
How embarrassed would I be if I got this tattoo?
なのでこれは第1位ですね。
So the number one is, like,
これは入れたら最も恥ずかしいタトゥー。
The most embarrassed I would be to have this tattoo.
では二番目はこちらです。
Number two is this one,
なんて書いてあるかというと、
And it says…
『かんたん 愛 くれまん』
“kantan ai kureman”
訳したのですがよくわからなくて
So, I don’t know I’ve translated this,
まずこれは文法的に全く合っていない。
I think this is grammatically totally incorrect.
それで、おかしな訳になってしまって。『簡単 愛 あげない』とか
So I did like a weird translation of “easy love no givee” or,
または『簡単 私を愛して ノー』
Or it could be “easy love me no…”
分からない！
I don’t know!
これ何を言わんとしているのか全く分からない。
I’m not even sure what they’re trying to say.
この、
Can you figure out what?
『かんたん 愛 くれまん』の意味、わかる？
They’re trying to say with “kantan ai kureman”?
くれまんやろう、簡単 「easy」 やね、愛でしょう？
“Kureman” right? “kantan” is “easy” and “ai” right?
これって『くれません』って意味と関係あるかな？
I assume that’s like something to do with “kuremasen”.
多分、くれませんっていうことなんだろうですね。
I guess “kureman” is…I wonder what?
方言とか
Is there some kind of “hogen”,
訛りに『くれまん』ってある？
some kind of dialect that uses “kureman”?
そういうこと？
Is that a thing?
聞いたことないかな。。。
I’ve never heard of it…

ええ、私もそういう言葉は聞いたことない。
Yeah, I’ve never heard anything like that.
これはおそらく単純に間違いかと。
I think it is probably just a mistake.
アイさん、これどう思います？

意味が、あの平仮名自体はきれいな平仮名やなとは思うけど。
The meaning…well the hiragana itself is well written I guess.
意味がないというか？意味がわかんないよねこれじゃ。
But I guess you would say there is no meaning.
何がいいたいのか解る？

“notice me”くらいなんかな。。。
Maybe there going for “notice me”?

もしこれが『くれません』だとしたら

混乱の理由としては
I think it’s this confusion,
皆さんよく、「あげる」「くれる」「もらう」を間違えて使うから
Because people often get confused with “ageru”,”kureru” and “morau”.

日本語学習中の外国人はよくこれらの言葉を間違えてしまう。
Foreigners trying to speak Japanese often mix up those words.
「簡単には愛せない」って伝えようとしてるかも・・・・
I think they’re trying to say that they don’t give love easily.
想像するに多分そういう事を言いたいのかと。
I assume that’s what they’re trying to say.
そうそうそう。
yes, yes, yes
多分、この人が受ける側やもんねレシーブ、レシーバー。
I guess this person is on the receiving side…
この場合、愛を与えるほうの側かなぁと思う。
I think they’re trying to say they’re the giver.
“give it you you”なんかなあ。。。
直ぐにはあなたを愛することはできないって意味かな・・・
I think they’re saying, I don’t give my love to you easily,
たぶん…
I think…
で反対の意味にもとれる…
But it could be the opposite, it could be,
愛情を受け止めることはできないとか
they’re saying I don’t receive love easily.
関西弁やったら
In Kansai dialect
たぶん、簡単くれへんって言ったら”I don’t receive”よね。
I guess if you said “kurehen” it would be “I don’t receive”, right?
くーれーまーん。分からない
Ku re ma n. I don’t know.
うーん、難しい
Yeah, I don’t know.

これカッコいい、それともかっこ悪い？
Cool or not cool, Ai?
アンクールやな。申し訳ないけど。
Yes, uncool. I’m sad to say.
これ自分のタトゥーだったら、かなり恥ずかしい。
I would be pretty embarrassed if I did have that one.
3. 時間治療 “Time Treatment”
ではこちら
Now this one…
次は
The next one is…
「時間治療」
“jikan chiryou”
これ第一印象、どうですか？
What’s your impression of just looking at that one?
彼女、というか、この人多分、アレなんじゃない？
She, or this person, is probably, like
心的にちょっと。。。
Mentally kind of…
癒しを欲しい人なんじゃない？
In need of some comfort, don’t you think
もしくは失恋をしたとかね？
Or maybe they’ve been through a break-up or something?
振られたことで・・・
They’ve lost out in love, and they’re,
癒しを求めている
Looking for some kind of solace.
これは、私が思うには
This one, I believe, is a direct,
直訳そのままですね。『時がすべてを解決してくれる』
聞いたことある？
Have you heard that one?
時がすべてを解決してくれるっていう意味は、時間が経つにつれて
Time heals all wounds means that as long as time goes on,
つらいことは忘れていく
You forget about the hurt of something.
つまり・・・
So…
もし今自分で自分の手を刺したらとても痛いけれど
If I stab myself in the hand now, it’s going to really hurt now.
一年後には治って大丈夫になる
But in a year’s time, I’ll probably be healed, I will be okay.
同じことが心の傷も癒やす
And same with any things of the emotion.
いまもし付き合っている人と別れたら今はとてもつらい
If you break up with someone, it hurts a lot now.
でも時間がそれを癒してくれる
But time will heal that.
決まり文句みたいだね。
So that’s like a set phrase.
時がすべてを解決する
Time heals all wounds.
「時間治療」という言葉が
And I think that’s what they were trying to translate,
そんな意味を持つと思っているね。
By saying “jikan chiryou”.
これこそ、そのままじゃない？
This, right here, is pretty straight ahead right?
ええ、これは直訳だけれど
Yeah, it’s like they’re just trying to do a real,
結果として
direct translation, but it just comes out as like,
私はこれ、時間が治す、ととりました。
I translated this time treatment.
なぜかというと「治療」は、
Because, “chiryou” is.
誰か、とか、何かをなおすこと、という意味ですよね？
“chiryou” to do is to treat someone right? To treat something.
はい、ちょっとわからないけど、これは結構恥ずかしい。
Yeah, I don’t know. I would be pretty embarrassed.
この言い方は聞いたことないし。
Not knowing that phrase.
「時間治療」ってきいてどう思う？何を思う？
What do you think of “jikan chiryou” what does it make you think of?
何か頭に浮かぶことある？
Does it make you think of anything?
多分、なんか、普通に。。。
Well, I guess, it’s just
失恋か？何か？苦しんでいるのかなってくらいかな。。。
Heart-break? or, all I can think is that they’re in some kind of pain…

4. 七輪 Ariana Grande’s “Coal-BBQ” Tattoo
4番目です。
Number four.
四番目は有名です。
And, number four is a famous one, Ai.
これは・・・
This is…
七輪。
「七輪」これはアリアナ グランデの有名なタトゥー。
“shichi rin” this is a famous one of Ariana Grande.
そうなの！？
really?
アリアナグランデは「七輪」ってタトゥー入れてたんだ、理由は、
Yeah, she got this tattoo because,
アルバムが「セブンリングス」
She had an album that was Seven rings.
セブンリングスっていう題
It’s called Seven Rings.
アリアナグランデが「私、アルバムの名前の七つの輪っていうタトゥーを入れたい」と。
And so she’s like, I want a tattoo of seven rings for my album.
そう、文字通り「七輪」
And so she got “shichi rin”, which literally,
って入れた。
makes sense.
「しち」が七、「りん」が輪っかとか円の意味
“shichi” seven and “rin” is like a circle or a ring.
だけど、七と輪を一緒にしちゃった
But you put “shichi rin” together.
で、バーベキュー、（焼肉）の名前に
And of course, that’s the name for a barbecue,
炭焼きのね
a coal barbecue, which looks like this.
これは実際の「七輪」
That is actually a “shichi rin”
なるほどね。
Oh, right.
これネットでちょっと炎上したね
So this one sort of blew up on the Internet a bit.
ちょっと間違えてただけなんだけど
And I think she actually got a bit abused, not abused,
みんなにそれはちょっとアホかと だって
But lots of people are calling it dumb because,
アリアナグランデが炭火焼肉のタトゥーって
She got a tattoo of a barbecue.
この辺りでツッコミはやめておこうか
So I don’t want to stick the boot in too much.
いやぁ
But…

残念だったねって、もうそれかな笑
Well, I guess it’s kinda like “bad luck”.
七輪か？他にもっといいことばありそうなんやけどね。
“Shichirin”? I feel like there must be some better way to say it.
七と輪を使わなくても。
Without using “shichi” and “rin”
たしかになんかほかにあっただろうね。
I’m sure there must have been.
この場合のいわゆる決まりとしては

If you are going to get a Kanji tattoo,
ネイティブスピーカーにチェックしてもらおう。
Get it checked by a native speaker.

I remember it took me forever to find something

Did you find a good one? Did you find a good to Google?
だいたいの予想ではしたけど、
I took my best crack at it using my imagination
やっぱりその人の言う、ニュアンスと熟語が、
But, you know, whether the meaning of what she told me
かっちり合ってたかって言われたら
and the phrase I came up with just right or not,
もう、それは分からないと思った。
I felt like I just didn’t know.
ほんと、そう。
Yeah, I agree.
つまり、違う言語で、正確に同じニュアンスの言葉を見つけるのは難しいってこと
Like, it’s so hard to find something that’s got the exact same nuance.
なぜかって、同じ言葉も、違う言語では違う意味になる
Because, words are different in different languages.
どんな言葉でも、
So I think if anything, it’s better to go the other way and say,
その言語でカッコいいと思う言葉は
Just find something in that language that you think is cool and,
その通り使った方がいいね
then use that.
でも大体タトゥーは
But the problem is most of the people are doing this,
日本語わからない人がやるからそれは問題がつきもの。
they don’t speak Japanese.
じゃあ、最初はどうしたらいいのかな？
So how are they going to find that thing in the first place?
例えば
Other than maybe just…
ネイティブスピーカーにアイデアあるか聞く以外に
Asking a native speaker if they’ve got any ideas or
そうだねぇ
I don’t know.
他にはいい方法はないかも。
I’m not sure if there’s a good way to do it.

5. ンリコ “Nriko” or “Colin”
五番目。
So number five,
今回はこれにしました。

これは残念だね
This is pretty unfortunate.
これ、読めます？
Can you read that one?
ンリコって書いてるけど、本当この人「Colin」でしょう？
This says nrico, but really this person is “Colin” right?
おそらくこの人の名前は、コリンさんですね
I think they must have been doing their name, Colin
これ下から上に書いてある。
But they’ve written it from the bottom to the top,
これは日本語ではありえないですよね？
Which, I don’t think that’s never really a thing in Japanese, is it?
日本語の基本は上から下、または右から左ですね
Like the traditional writing is top to bottom, right to left?

But it’s never really bottom to top, is it?

タトゥー入れてる人、
What do you think of people getting, there’s,
の多くは自分たちの名前を入れてるけど、
actually, a lot of people that get their names as a tattoo,
カタカナや、時々は当て字の漢字とかでね、
In Katakana or occasionally try and do Kanji or get in Kanji.
What do you think of that?
わざわざ名前書かなくてもいいかな。
I’m not sure you have to go out of your way to write your name.

母国語でやったほうがいいと思う
I reckon you should do it in your own language.

If you think of the first idea, if you say think of a tattoo,

Probably that’s the first thing you think of is I could get my name.
英語でも自分の名前入れへんやろう。
But you wouldn’t write your name in English would you?

I wouldn’t be surprised, there must be a few.

But I think if you’re going to do it,
ちゃんとわかる母国語でやったほうがいいね。
You should do it in your own language and own it.

それがどれだけの意味を持つかっていう人によるのじゃないかな？
That was important to them, it depends who the person was, right?

That’s right, and, what would you say,

きっとそんな裸でこう歩いてるわけじゃないやろうから、

プライベートといえばプライベートじゃん？
So I guess you could say it’s pretty private right?

So it’s not like they’re showing it off all the world.

6. 性行為 “Sex act” or “Sexual activity”
では六番目にいきましょう。
All right, let’s go on number six.
こちらです。
I put down this one,
性行為」意味は、性的な行為、とか性的な行動
“sei koui” which means “sex act” or “sexual activity”.
この人何がいいたいのだろう。
I don’t know what they’re trying to say here.

It’s just literal, not played with at all,

Yeah, if you’re getting a tattoo, you’re at least 18 or so.
そうそう、少なくとも大人の年代の
Right, you’re at least an adult.
これは不合格ってことにしよう。

これは何ともわからないね。

「中毒者」意味は「中毒とか依存」
“chuu dokusha” which is an “addict”.

この漢字自身はすごい
The kanji themselves are amazingly
きれいな字はきれいな字。
pretty. There’s no doubt they’re well written.
この字自体そのものがきれいってことだ
So you like the form of the letters themselves?
でもわざわざアディクションを、
But with their addiction, do they really need to
アナウンスする必要はあるのかなと思うんだけど。
announce it to the world
同じように思った。
That’s what I was thinking.
なんでこれを宣伝するのかなって。
Why do you need to announce it?
たぶんこれ前にも話したけど、
But maybe it’s like we were talking,

About before, where people get tattoos of negative things,
わざわざ入れるのって
To remind themselves.

自分が中毒患者って
Perhaps this is somebody trying to remind themselves,

That they’re an addict because,
そういう人達のこと聞いたことある
You hear people that are addicted things talking about.
もうやめてからも
Even if I’ve stopped using them,
もう再開してもいないのに
They like to remember that they’re still an addict,
その中毒だったことを思い出したりするんだって。
If they ever start again.

There could be that.

So maybe it’s not too bad but really,

The other thing that strikes me about this,
英語のアディクトってちょっとカッコいいんだよね
Is the word addict in English is kind of cool.
ちょいワルでカッコいいニュアンスもあるんだ、
It’s got a bit of a bad kind of maybe cool nuance in some ways,
だけど、「中毒者」ってそんな感じじゃないよね。
Whereas “chuu dokusha”, I don’t think does.
中毒って
Like “chuu doku”….
「毒」はあの 毒 でしょ？
“doku” is poison right?
だから「中毒」はまさに
So, “chu doku” is literally like…
毒されてるとか今まさに毒を使ってるような意味のような
You’re in the poison or you’re in the middle of using this poison.

I suppose!
だから「中毒者」ってほとんど
So, “chuu dokusha” almost sounds,
ちょっともうなんていうか化学用語みたい
A little bit scientific to me or something.
英語のアディクトはちょっとカッコいい感じだけど
Or like it doesn’t sound cool in the same way,
「中毒者」にはそういうかっこよさはないね。
That Addict sounds at least a little bit cool.
中毒は中毒、例えばさ”Being bad”って結構
Well “addicted” is “addicted. For example “Being bad” is pretty,
聞こえは、なんかアトラクティブというか？
it sounds, quite attractive wouldn’t you say?
楽しいのは楽しいじゃない？
Don’t you think there is something “fun” about it?

What is “tanoshii” or attractive?
例えば 「Addict」 って、悪いけどけどもそれなりに、その。。。
It’s like “addict”, I guess you could say it’s “bad”
カッコよく使う風潮もあるじゃん？
But there is something cool about it too right?
社会的にこういうのって中毒っていうのも本当は、

9. テキトーな日本語です “Any old Japanese letters”
ではこれですが、これもよくわからないやつです。
Now this one I’m not too sure about.
これは、「テキトーな日本語です」って文章ですね。
This one is “tekito na nihongo desu”, and it’s like a whole sentence.
これは「どうでもいい日本語の文字」という意味なのか
Which means “any old Japanese letters” or,
「適当に選んだ日本語」か
“Just some random Japanese”,
そんな感じの訳かな。
I guess you could translate it as.
「テキトーな日本語です」ってどう思う？
What do you think, “tekitona nihongo desu”?
ほんまそのまま適当に考えてん、この人。
Well this person has really just written whatever, really.

10. Badly drawn/executed Kanji tattoos

I think that’s meant to be “ki or “moku”.

これは「全」だけど、たぶん「お金」「金（きん）」のこと。
This one? It says Zen, but I think it’s meant to be “kane” or “kin”
「金」やろうな
Yes I think it’s meant as “kane”
Planetのことを言っているのかな？
I wonder if they were referring to the planet?

Or possibly “Mon, Tue,Wed,Thur”

曜日にしては順番が間違ってるね。
It’s the wrong order for the days of the week,
うん、そうだよね。
That’s true.
字が汚いね。
And, they all look really badly drawn.
水も、ほかのも全部ね。
The water one, all of them,
「木」は「ホ」に見える。
The one for “wood” looks like it’s “ho”,
線がつながってないからね。
because the lines aren’t joined up,
そうそうそう、格好良く書いてたら、まあ、
Yes, if it was well written, maybe,
あれやけど、漢字間違えてるし、ちょっと違うってのはあるかもね。
But the kanji aren’t right, so it feels a bit off.
「全」に見える字、これは「すべて」って意味で
Especially, the one that looks like “zen”, which means “everything”.
だけど二つ棒線が足りないね。
But, I think it’s missing two lines,

棒線が二本必要。
Which would be the ones that would make it
「金属」「金」「お金」の意味にするには
“metal” or “gold” or “money”.
でもこの線はあとからでも付け加えられるからよかったけど。
But on the bright side, they could add those lines in later,

And they could join up the lines in wood as well.

But the only thing about this is,

The little “ten” at the top is like, quite off off-center.
もしこのタトゥー入れたとしたら

I would be always trying to push the “ten” back around.

You also need to make sure everything’s lined up right?

But if it is like, the “yuu” is much bigger than the “ei”,
